Don’t be afraid to try and crochet these super cute gnomes. Without a doubt, if you know how to make a single crochet then you will rock it!

The pattern is written specifically for beginners and we have included lots of pictures to guide you through it. Gnome projects are extremely simple amigurumi projects with minimal components for attachment and no difficult shapes.

Crochet holiday gnomes- Valentine’s day!

February is the month of love and what better way to celebrate it than crocheting a few Valentine’s day home decorations?

When we published the crochet winter gnome pattern we were amazed by all the creativity you shared over the Passionatecrafter’s Facebook group. There were so many variations! In addition, we decided to make two gnomes- we added the crochet girl gnome (Yay!).

Everybody needs a partner, right?

Crochet Valentine’s gnome pattern details:

When I started this crochet gnomes CAL (crochet along) I didn’t even imagine how many people would love to make crochet gnomes with us. After seeing the love you gave to the first January winter gnome pattern I decided to return the love by making the February gnome more special.

What makes the crochet Valentine’s gnome set special?

The idea behind the CAL was to make 1 crochet gnome per month, however, I crocheted not 1 but 4 different Valentine’s gnomes. Why? Because I know that there are plenty of crocheters who are new to amigurumi and need more simple projects to start with, at the same time there are also more experienced ones as well. Therefore, we created 2 sets that everybody can enjoy!

The first set of crochet gnomes is more beginner-friendly and uses the same crochet stitches we used when crocheting the winter gnome.

The second set of crochet gnomes has a few crochet techniques that may need a bit of practice or can be intimidating for a beginner crocheter.

What yarn to use and what yarn substitutes?

The best thing I made undoubtedly is creating the Passionatecrafter’s crochet Facebook group. So many people have already shared their wonderful crochet gnomes that you have endless possibilities to choose from when deciding on yarn.

For my crochet gnome pattern, I used worsted-weight yarn. The brand I chose is Bernat Premium yarn by Yarnspiration. This yarn is one of my latest favorites as I just love how soft and squishy it is. I already had it in my stash in almost every color and decided to use it for the crochet gnome-along.

The fellow makers have used almost every weight of yarn that you can find on today’s market. Therefore, it is safe to say that you can use whatever yarn you have in your stash. For example, it could be DK (double weight) yarn, Aran weight yarn, worsted weight yarn, or sport weight yarn.

Some of you even made the tiniest little crochet gnomes I have ever seen by using cotton thread 10 yarn. Honestly, I can never crochet something so small!

Can I use cotton or acrylic yarn for the crochet gnome pattern?

Absolutely! If you have cotton yarn in your stash feel free to use it, if you are more of an acrylic-type yarn person- use acrylic. Crochet must be enjoyable- why not use the yarn we love?

What if I use velvet yarn?

Of course, why not! Just keep in mind that your crochet gnome will be bigger.

What is new in this crochet gnome pattern?

As I said the pattern is oriented toward beginners furthermore we kept the body the same as the January winter gnome pattern. But we added a few extra small crochet items to make the final gnome outstanding. We added a few adorable crochet amigurumi hearts and a few cute crochet heart appliques.

crochet hook size 4mm/ US crochet hook size G
poly fiber fill for stuffing
a piece of cardboard around 15cm square/6-inch square for the base
tapestry needle

Special notes:

The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
The pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join your rounds.
The body, hat, hands, nose, and beard are the same as the January gnome crochet pattern
The January gnome was written with an amigurumi shortcode style. What does it mean? For example, if it says: Rnd 5: SC 3, inc 1 7 times (35) you need to make – SC in the first 3 stitches, increase in the next stitch and repeat this sequence 7 times in total for the round. But some of you found it hard to follow it that way so we decided to share it as usual. You can follow whichever is better for you!
If you are crocheting loosely, use a smaller hook so your work will be tighter and the stuffing won’t be visible.
When stuffing the body- stuff it well, so it will stay in shape, but don’t overdo it.
I made the hat separate, but feel free to sew it onto the body. You can fill it with stuffing before sewing.
I used big and small crochet heart appliques, add as much as you like.

Rnd 2: 2 SC in each around (14)

Rnd 3: *SC in first, 2 SC in next * 7 times (21)

Rnd 5: * SC in next 3, 2 SC in next * 7 times (35)

Before we continue, we need to measure our base and cut the cardboard. My base is 10cm/ 4 inches wide. Place your crochet piece in the center of the cardboard and use a pen to draw a circle. Draw the circle around the crochet piece and then cut it. While cutting the cardboard, cut it a bit smaller, so it will not stick out.

How to attach all the pieces to the body.

Before you start, take a few safety pins and secure the pieces before sewing. It will help to sew them correctly.

Firstly, we will sew all the pieces on round 24. Therefore, place the beard in the center and secure it with safety pins.

Secondly, take the hands and place them on both sides of the body. I left 5 stitches between the beard and the hands. Make sure the bobble stitch(your thumb) is placed upward.

Afterward, place the nose onto the beard. Stuff it a bit with stuffing. I placed mine as half of my nose is on the beard, and the upper half is on the body.

How to make the braids of the she-gnome:

First, take an A4 size notebook or cardboard and wrap your yarn around the shorter side about 20-30 times. After that, cut it from one side and now you will have a long piece of yarn. Fold it from the middle. Once, you have your hair pieces cut it is time to put them onto the gnome’s body.

Now take your hook and insert it 3-4 stitches on the left or right side of the gnome’s nose. Attach the folded piece of yarn and pull it through the loop. Take the yarn off the hook and insert the opposite side through the loop we created with the yarn as we are making a tie note. SEE the pictures below.

I wanted to make more thick braids for my gnome so I made two rows of hair and then just braided it a bit more loosely.

Crochet easy amigurumi heart pattern:

-with red, pink or whatever color you choose

Rnd 1: Start with a MR, and make 5 SC into it. (5)

Rnd 2: *inc 1* 5 times (10)

Rnd 3-4: SC in each stitch around (10)

Fasten off and make one more piece repeating rnd 1-4. When you are done with the second piece do not cut your yarn. We will continue working with it by joining the two pieces.

Rnd 5: Crochet the two pieces together. 10 SC from the first and 10 SC from the second piece. (20)

Rnd 6: *SC in next 8. Dec 1* 2 times (18)

Rnd 7: *SC in next 7, Dec 1* 2 times (16)

Rnd 8: *SC in next 2, Dec 1* 4 times (12)

How to crochet an envelope:

-with white yarn

Row 1: CH 16, SC in 2nd from your hook, SC in each chain across, CH 1, turn (15)

Row 2-15: SC in each stitch across, CH 1, turn (15)

Fasten off.

Fold all the corners to the middle. Sew both bottom corners to form the envelope. I used a mini heart applique as a button to open and close the envelope.
