Valentine’s Day Fabric Hearts Tutorial - Willow Bloom Home (1)

I created this Valentine’s Day Fabric Hearts Tutorial for those of you looking for a quick and simple Valentine’s craft. This is a very economical project to make, as it is made of small fabric scraps and a small amount of batting. These sweet hearts would be a great gift or just a lovely addition to your home this Valentine’s season. This project does require a sewing machine for quick construction, though you could sew by hand if you have the time.

Instructions For The Valentine’s Day Fabric Hearts Tutorial

Before beginning, print the heart pattern onto cardstock and then cut around the heart outline to form a template. The template may not be visible on a mobile device. It can be viewed and printed from a desktop computer.

  • Cut out the double layer of fabric, then place the two pieces of cut fabric wrong sides together
  • Repeat for all fabrics

  • Notice the one inch gap where the stuffing will be inserted
  • Stuff the heart with polyester filling using a chopstick a little at a time (Don’t overstuff)

  • Pin the open edge of the heart
  • Sew the edge closed, pressing down on the stuffing and ensuring that the stitching is ¼” from the fabric edge
  • Trim all loose threads and cut around the perimeter of the heart using the pinking shears to create a zigzag edge (be careful not to cut into your stitching!)

I’m so happy with how these cute hearts turned out! I think they look best when made in several coordinating patterns. What do you think?

Variations

Fabric

You can adapt the Valentine’s Day fabric hearts tutorial in several ways. The easiest modification is to choose different fabrics- anything in red, pink, and white are classic Valentine’s colours. However, you can choose any colour scheme that suits you. Black is also a popular Valentine’s colour when mixed with red and white. You can also use a different type of fabric. I used quilting cotton, but you could use silk, velvet, or felt. Just choose a fabric that is not too thick or cutting the pinking edge will be a challenge.

Hanging String

If you want a hanging heart, just add a small piece of string. I made some different hearts with a hanging string and a bow on the front. You can embellish your hearts however you like, with ribbon, buttons, or mini silk flowers.

Edging

If you don’t want to do a pinked (zigzag) edge, you can do a frayed edge or sew the fabric right sides together and flip the right sides out to have seamed edges. You will need to make your heart pattern a little larger (about 15-20%) to allow for the seam margin. To make a frayed edge, just follow the instructions above, omitting the pinking step and allowing the edges to naturally fray over time. Or you can speed up the process by rubbing the edges and pulling gently at loose threads.

Size

You can also change the size of these hearts by scaling up the pattern. I don’t recommend sizing down but you can size up as much as you want.

Scented

Finally, to add a sweet scent, you could fill the hearts with dried lavender. Alternatively, you could place a few drops of essential oil on a piece of stuffing in the very center of the stuffing. You’ll want to avoid getting oil on the fabric.

Styling Ideas

These look really cute in a small wooden box, basket, or bowl. I styled mine with some adorable wooden mini signs I made last Valentine’s Day using a kit from Homeworks DIY.

Or you can add a little plant, real or faux, for some contrast. Wouldn’t this make a cute gift for someone special?

If you chose to add a hanging loop, then you can hang them from drawer knobs or hang them on the wall. I like the idea of hanging them on the wall and adding a little frame around each one for a fun, seasonal wall display. You could also string several together to create a Valentine garland.

Summary

I hope you have found my Valentine’s Day fabric hearts tutorial useful. I’d love to hear how you would make these hearts and who you’d make them for. This could be a fun Valentines Day project to do with children. Choosing the fabric and stuffing the hearts are tasks that most children two and up could do. Happy crafting!
