I've been contemplating whitening my teeth for some time now, but haven't for two reasons. First, it's really expensive. I mean, $40? I can think of so many other things I could buy with 40 bucks! The second thing, I just can't get past all of the yucky chemicals that I can't pronounce, so I move on. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to make my own homemade natural whitening toothpaste recipe and see if it worked. I'm a coffee and tea drinker, and my teeth weren't horribly stained, but not really white either. I had my doubts about the outcome, but man...it worked! WHOOP! I can't tell you how great the timing is for this since I am not only going to a blog conference next week, but I'm also speaking. Here is what I used for my whitening paste...

I mixed ¼ cup of baking soda, ⅓ cup of hydrogen peroxide and 12 drops of Peppermint Essential Oils. The peppermint is an added bonus. It not only makes the toothpaste taste better, but has extra whitening properties. If you don't have the peppermint oil, it's totally okay to skip that ingredient, but I love it so much better with it!

I mixed the ingredients together and stored them in a small ball jar.

I brushed my teeth with this mixture 3 times each week for two minutes each time, and these were the results. Please excuse my teeny tiny lips ;)

I do not recommend brushing your teeth with this mixture more than that because the baking soda is an abrasive, but definitely has teeth cleaning properties.

  2. My 'paste' ended up seperating so I had baking soda on bottom and hydrogen peroxide on top....are the amounts correct?

    • That is what happened to me. Is the baking soda supposed to dissolve in the peroxide? It is definitely a runny liquid and not a paste.

    • When I made it, same thing . . maybe a bit too much peroxide, which, I guess, can be ‘fixed’ by adding more baking soda. Also, I keep my jar upside down so when I use it, the baking soda ‘paste’ is on top rather than the excess peroxide! I think I’m going to add some Aloe Vera gel in with the whole works and a tad of salt . . good luck! And a drop or two of clove . .
I’d be interested to know what you do, if you find the time, please let me know!

      • Add some coconut oil to it and see if that doesn't help with the consistancy.

  3. If you only use this 3x per week, what do you brush with the rest of the time?

    Reply

    • The other days, I use my regular toothpaste...whatever brand you normally use. Hope this helps!

  4. My mixture is runny! It separated so the hydrogen peroxide is on top of the baking soda. How do we eliminate this and store it? Does it need to be refrigerated?

    Reply

    • Hmm...not sure why it would separate. It doesn't need to be refrigerated, but you can just stir it before each use. Hope this helps!

  5. You can always add coconut oil to make more of a paste. I melt mine first, mix it all together and then refrigerate.

    • Now that makes more sense! I use Coconut Oil ( ONLY Organic Cold Pressed, Unrefined) to "Oil Pull" and that really works for whiter teeth every time!

      • Do you use coconut oil plus the peroxide and baking soda? Or substitute something?
