My Instant Pot is 2 years old and it is quickly becoming the most used appliance in the kitchen.

Well, except for the Keurig; I’m a new-ish mom and caffeine is life, right?

Our Instant Pot is so versatile and so easy to use (hello dump and start pressure cooker dishes!) that I find myself planning dinner in it more than anything else. In fact, I can honestly say I barely use my oven for dinner anymore unless I’m giving something a quick broil.

I mean, what can’t you cook in the Instant Pot? Macaroni and cheese, pot roast, soup, even cheesecake!

I make a lot of dump and go pasta recipes in the Instant Pot. It’s so kid-friendly! Camden is 1 year old and pasta is one of his favorite foods. He can’t get enough of the stuff, and I know most kids are on-board with easy pasta dishes.

This dump and start Instant Pot Baked Ziti is so kid-friendly, you could even have them make it for you!

It takes just 5 ingredients (salt and pepper don’t count!), less than 10 minutes using the pressure cooker part of your Instant Pot, and you’re good to go.

The recipe uses a jar sauce, which makes a busy weeknight that much easier for us moms. Plus, it is vegetarian with hidden vegetables, making it a healthy meal for the kids as well.

How to Make Dump and Start Instant Pot Baked Ziti

Turn on your Instant Pot, walk away, and dinner will be ready in a few, hence the dump and start method.

Note: This meal contains no meat and is vegetarian as is. This dish can also be made with meat, such as ground turkey, chicken or beef. The easiest way add it is to cook the meat in your Instant Pot (or one the stove) before cooking the pasta, place it to the side, then add it in right before you stir in the cheese.

Start by pouring your pasta sauce in the bottom of your Pot. Add your dry noodles, mushrooms and bell peppers (and any other veggies you want to sneak in!). Sprinkle garlic salt, pepper, and salt over top.

Measure 3 cups of water and pour on top of noodles. DO NOT STIR! This is so important – if you stir it, the water will combine, and you won’t have enough liquid for the IP to come to pressure!

Now the dump and start part. Put on the lid and turn it to ‘seal.’ Set the Instant Pot to ‘manual’ for 5 minutes. This will allow the pressure cooker part to start.

When it’s done, quick release the pressure. Give the pasta a quick stir (if you’re making the dish with meat, this is where you add this in) then sprinkle in 1/2 c. of each of the cheeses. Stir it again to distribute cheese throughout.

Then top your pasta with the remaining cup of cheese. Let sit for a few minutes so the cheese on top gets melty.

If you want, you can transfer your Instant Pot Baked Ziti to a baking dish, top with cheese and broil for a few minutes to get a golden-brown cheese crust.

Voila – dinner is served! Yep, it really is that easy!

This pairs perfectly with a nice packaged salad and pre-made garlic bread to make this meal ideal for busy weeknights.

TIP: This makes a lot of pasta, so you can always freeze half. If you’re going to freeze it, I recommend removing half of the pasta before adding the cheese. Cheese can get a little funky when you freeze it.

Freeze the pasta in an airtight freezer container. I usually put it in a container and then wrap the container in plastic wrap or a freezer Ziploc bag.

To reheat: Thaw completely. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove. You may need to add a little fresh sauce or a little water. Once it’s heated, stir in cheese and sprinkle cheese on top!

FAQs

Can I prep baked ziti the night before? ›

Yes, the dish can be assembled, covered, and refrigerated for up to 2 days in advance. Bake, covered tightly with aluminum foil, in a 425°F (220°C) oven for 25 minutes. Then uncover and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese is lightly browned and the pasta is hot throughout.

Should I thaw frozen baked ziti before cooking? ›

By allowing it to thaw in the fridge, you can cook it at the regular time and temperature (350 degrees for about 30 minutes). If you do not thaw it in advance, it will take much longer to cook. If you cook it completely frozen, it will take anywhere from 90 minutes – 2 hours to cook all the way through.

Why is my baked ziti dry? ›

Make sure to toss your ziti with plenty of sauce

But we've all likely sunk a fork into a baked ziti that's just too dry, seeming like a conglomeration of noodles instead of a moist sum of its parts. That pitfall, according to The Kitchn, is almost always due to not saucing the ziti adequately.

How do you reheat frozen baked ziti? ›

After many tests, I suggest preheating your oven to 400 degrees for best results. Remove any plastic wrap that is covering the pan. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and put it in the preheated oven on the center rack. If the pan of baked ziti is frozen, cook it for 65-75 minutes.

Should baked ziti be covered when baking? ›

Should I cover Baked Ziti while it's baking? Yes. Cover loosely with foil so it doesn't stick to the cheese, then bake for 20 minutes. Then remove the foil so the cheese can go bubbly and golden!

How long can baked ziti be refrigerated before baking? ›

Refrigerating and then baking an assembled, unbaked ziti: Cover the assembled ziti with foil and refrigerate up to 24 hours.

Is it better to freeze baked ziti before or after baking? ›

I would par-cook the noodles because they will be sitting in sauce and absorbing a little moisture while waiting to become all the way frozen. I wouldn't bake it at this point, just let the pasta, cheese, and sauce hang out, covered in the freezer.

Can I freeze leftover baked ziti? ›

If freezing: Let the dish cool completely, then cover with a double layer of foil to prevent freezer burn. The ziti can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months. To cook from frozen, place the covered ziti in a 350 degree F oven and cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

How do you reheat baked ziti without drying it out? ›

The baked ziti should be placed in an oven-safe dish, lightly covered with foil to keep it moist. If the ziti appears dry, adding a bit of marinara sauce can help retain its moisture. The dish should then bake for about 20-30 minutes, depending on portion size.

Does baked ziti contain ricotta cheese? ›

Add half the pasta to the baking dish, top with dollops of the ricotta, the remaining spinach, and scoop the remaining pasta on top. Top with the mozzarella and pecorino cheese. Drizzle with olive oil and bake until the cheese is browned, 16 to 22 minutes.

What is a substitute for ricotta cheese in baked ziti? ›

Mix a cup of substitute egg or 4 eggs with a carton of cottage cheese. Mix until fully blended. I've used fat free cottage cheese this way and it's worked out well. Make sure to add salt and pepper - remember ricotta is a creamy but fairly bland ingredient without it.

Why is my baked ziti so watery? ›

Why is my pasta bake watery? There are a couple of reasons why your pasta bake might be runny. Sauce that is thick at room temperature or from the fridge will thin out in the hot oven. It is better to have a thicker sauce at the beginning, so it will be the right consistency after cooking.

Can you put warm baked ziti in the fridge? ›

Planning on finishing off the leftover ziti in the next few days? Then add it to the fridge in an airtight container or top with aluminum foil. It'll be good 4-5 days.

How long can baked ziti sit out? ›

Lasagna is the kind of food that can keep a family fed for many nights in a row, happily. But it has other perks, too: namely, that you can prepare the whole thing in advance, and store it in the fridge overnight—ready to pop in the oven an hour or so before dinner (just before the kids start to whine).
