Audience Member Classic horror film. Funny at times and suspenseful. The prom scene is epic. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Jeff M It's impossible to fathom that this movie is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Virtually everything about it has aged so beautifully that I think I'm ready to declare this the best horror film of the 70s, a designation that 1978's HALLOWEEN has held in my heart for many years. Both are masterpieces of the genre, but CARRIE just feels a bit more complex and emotionally engaging, something rare in a horror movie. Continuing with the hyperbole, I think it's also the best cinematic Stephen King adaptation - by a comfortable margin. In an era of school shootings and teenage violence, it now takes on a new and rather deeper perspective that probably wasn't intended, at least so specifically. Watching Carrie's climactic eruption brought upon by the merciless taunts of her classmates feels a lot more disturbing now. Spacek is extraordinary - I'm considering adding her to my All-Time Great Performances series - and although technically the "villain" of the piece, she brings such humanity and vulnerability to the role, one can't help but sympathize. Laurie is also fantastic in a performance that could have gone completely haywire but miraculously feels rooted in reality. Both were justifiably Oscar nominated. Director DePalma's joy and brilliance at filmmaking abound throughout, from camera shots to split screens to subtle and not so subtle homages to Hitchco*ck. I'm generally not a fan of the horror genre, but I think this is one of the few examples that transcends its roots and enters into the arena of true art. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Robert W This is a horror classic this is one of my favourites watch it if you haven't Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Ray F Una película que para su época genera mucho terror con efectos un cuanto llamativos, en lo personal la mirada de carrie al momento de llevar a cabo un asesinato es muy dura y penetrante, con un final al estilo de los clásicos de terror. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/24 Full Review Howard H Superb film. The suspense leading to the prom scene is chilling with genuine likeable characters throughout. Watching it 40 years apart it is still as relevant today than when it was released. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Iker S I honestly loved Carrie. It is not extremely horrific, counts with a solid storyline and generates a valuable, empathic connection with the protagonist. One of the best films I have seen in recent times! Carrie | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Pauline Kael New Yorker Carrie is a terrifying lyrical thriller. The director, Brian De Palma, has mastered a teasing style -- a perverse mixture of comedy and horror and tension. Jan 20, 2024 Full Review Carrie | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Wendy Ide Times (UK) Brian De Palma elevates what could have been a trashy exploitation picture into something mitigated by the angry empathy it places in the put-upon outsider. Jul 15, 2022 Full Review Carrie | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Adam Nayman The Ringer It opens with an insidiously brilliant update of Psycho's shower scene and ends with a jump scare that Hitchco*ck would have envied; in between, it's merely the tenderest and most affecting movie ever made out of one of King's novels. Sep 5, 2019 Full Review Carrie | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Carrie, in the end, is not a very serious film, but it is a rarity: a fun diversion that is truly enjoyable. [Full review in Spanish] Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Carrie | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Howard Waldstein CBR Carrie is relentlessly torn down time and again by everyone around her, and the climactic prom event, taking on a split-screen style, perfectly illustrates the fractured mind of a person who just can't take it anymore. Jul 18, 2023 Full Review Carrie | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry Grounded by the incredible and unforgettable performance of Sissy Spacek and the masterful direction of De Palma, Carrie is a horror masterpiece that defies convention and proves itself timeless.
